I can understand just letting it grow and grow, until you drink in all of the deliciousness that is fine baby hair that twists into golden, shiny, spirals.
However, if the child is not, in fact, a girl, I might refrain from dressing him in androgynous clothing and putting a red clip in his hair to keep it off his face.
Failing this last point, however, I might be a little more forgiving when a well-intentioned stranger compliments him by saying, “she has gorgeous hair.”
Seriously, this couldn’t be the first time the mistake has been made.

I held off on cutting Bart’s hair for the longest time because his curls were so gorgeous. I would have him dressed as a boy, head to toe, and people would still tell him he was a pretty girl. I didn’t care much, because he was pretty and I just loved his hair. It still pains me that those curls got swept up and thrown out. Of course, I kept one for the (non-existent) baby book, but one just isn’t the same as a whole head of them.
*Sigh* without the curls, my baby turned into a boy.

One of my friends made that very mistake with a child whose hair was waist length and held back with a barrette. The boy's mother was very angry and left in a huff.
Holy cow those are beautiful curls. I would have kept them as long as I could as well! Matthew just had a few wispy baby curls at the back of his head that of course disappeared after his 1st cut which did not happen until he was about a year old because I wanted to look at this curls for as long as possible!
I have a sister-in-law, whose cherubic (sarcasm central, here) little boy looks just like a girl. What's worse, she dresses him in Laura Ashley type hoity-toity stuff and little white shoes with jingle bells on them (every time the kid walks by at a holiday gathering, I find myself looking for my cat), so it doesn't help the situation. He's NEVER been taken for a boy, even when he would wear a blue bib that has "I'm NOT a girl" embroidered on it. If she would cut his hair (long blond ringlets) and put him in a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt or something, the problem would be solved, but NO, that would be anathema to her Little Lord Fauntleroy fetish. (Oh, man I hope no one I know sees this comment - just in case, I'm posting it anonymously.) Every time they mention the problem I want to say, "Well, DUH!!!!!!"
I should also say, that I think Luke looks like a little boy, even with the curls. A really adorable little boy. My little brother looked like that when he was little, but his curls were red.
Oops, I just briefly posted that as myself, so back to anonymous with me. ;) But now YOU know who I am, Lori.
"anonymous" - I guessed it was you from the first comment. We share the gift of sarcasm, my friend!
Gorgeous hair! I hope my child has hair like that. There's a chance, since it's in my genes. We'll have to see!
Oh, those curls are so cute! I can only imagine how hard it is to cut those off; a haircut really makes little boys look SO much older.
I love his hair. I would have been sad to see it go, too.

Beautiful, beautiful curls. Having bone straight hair I'm very jealous of the curly haired.
Oh, my. Those curls are delicious!
Oh WOW. That is a beautiful child! Love the hair. I would have never cut it. ;)
Jelly Bean's hair needs trimming, but I am wanting to hold on to the baby in him for a little while longer. Getting a hair cut makes them into big boys! And I am just not ready.
My baby brother had a spiral afro until he was 4. My mom could not bring herself to have it cut since he was the only one of all of us to be born with any hair, much less curly gorgeous hair.
Very cute photos!
Oh, he is SO MONEY when he gets older. Chicks dig the curly hair.
I cannot believe someone would put a CLIP in a little boy's hair, unless they were just totally mental attached to it, like a blankie, or something.
OH my goodness! Delicious indeed! How flippin' cute is he? I actually used to dream of having ringleted children, but alas mine only have slight curl. I could never stand to cut it off anyway. I love longish toddler boy hair:)
But there is no mistaking him for a boy, but people are stupid. My boys all got that too.
Clips/barrettes on the other hand? duh!
He was gorgeous with his curls... My little girls had/have curly hair, while my boy has hair like one of those stiff-bristled brushes. Not as cute. (although the boy is ADORABLE.)
your boy is so beautiful - what gorgeous curls. i understand your angst in cutting them. btw, you have to check out either people or us has the latest picture of celine dion's son Rene Jr. - talk about gender confusion...
Amreen - I saw that. Now that kid does look like a girl.
Hey - have you seen celine dion's son? His hair is LONG!
I knew a little boy whose mom didn't cut his hair for 3 years. I saw him at a birthday party in the spring, and it had been a long time. I thought it was a girl.
Same thing. A cute either/or outfit.
And then his mom said to me "I'm debating cutting his hair."
Please do. I don't think he'll look back at his toddler pics that fondly.
I am SUCH a sucker for curls.
